‘There’s always room for another restaurant’

By Zoe Robinson

Joe Tweedale webLast year we ran a competition for anyone taking part in the food tour, or as we like to call them, Streatham’s Food Tourists. The prize was a meal for two at the winner’s food tour restaurant of choice. The lucky local was Joseph Tweedale, an actor living in Streatham who loves the vibrant food community his neighbourhood has to offer. We caught up with Joe to find out what top tips he can offer to anyone new to our fabulous food tour, and whether he’ll be back for more in 2014.

What inspired you to take part in the Food Tour last year – are you local or did you travel some distance to take part?
I heard it advertised via word of mouth, as well as seeing leaflets for it in a number of local cafés and restaurants. I love my food so I thought it would be a great thing to get involved in! I live just off Streatham Common so it was very easy for me to get to all of the cafés and restaurants.

We would love to know if you would recommend the Food Tour to friends – if so, why?
I absolutely would recommend the food tour! I’d lived in Streatham for just under a year when I took part in it last time and the best thing about it was getting the chance to explore all the different varieties of restaurants along the High Road (before the 2013 food tour I had hardly been in a third of them). It was great to really experience the huge diversity of food in Streatham.

What was your favourite dish or venue?
Bravi Ragazzi – best pizza I’ve ever had!

What is your favourite food memory of Streatham?
Discovering Slurp’s amazing lunch meal deal.

Do you have any tips for 2014 food tourists?
My advice would be to go to as many places as possible. You’re stomach is lying if it thinks you’re full. There’s always room for another restaurant!

Will you be taking part this year?
I will indeed be taking part this year.

Is there anything else you want to tell us about what you got out of your 2013 Streatham Food Tour experience?
It was great to have so much variety on the tour because there were restaurants that I wouldn’t have specifically chosen to visit. Since going, my taste has definitely been broadened.

Take the ‘Food Tourist Challenge’:
For his prize last year, Joe chose to have a meal at Bravi Ragazzi. To be in with a chance of winning dinner for two at the restaurant of your choice, pick-up a scorecard from participating restaurants or grab one from our festival ‘Tour Guides’ who’ll be located throughout Streatham wearing Food Festival branded aprons and chefs hats. This year you only need 3 restaurant stamps to be in with a chance of winning – but don’t let that stop you from getting a lot more. The Streatham Food Tour runs from Thurs 5th – Sat 7th June.
